Internal vs External HR

Updated: Nov 12, 2019

The art of finding talent to complete a task is not as easy as it seems to be. Businesses today need people with multiple skills to complete tasks faster and more efficiently than ever before. The Human Resource Department is responsible for finding these persons, payroll administration, employee relations and sometimes employee counseling. Recruitment is just one of the many activities HR is supposed to carry out. But given their other duties are also very critical to the business success, the recruitment process is sometimes outsourced to external recruiters. External recruiters have a sole purpose of finding the qualified candidate(s) for a company. They are search gigs and often have a large network which they can leverage to find talent.

Hiring can happen in two ways: Internal or External. Internal hiring may occur when an employee gets promoted or moves to another role within the same company. This is easily handled by HR. External hiring involves publicly announcing vacancies for anyone qualified to apply. Given the high rate of applicants who apply for jobs (about 250 candidates per cooperate job opening), most companies used an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) to screened resumes to a number between five to ten who meet a chosen criterion. Unfortunately, this lengthy process sometimes does not produce the needed candidate at the end and here is where recruiters come in. Recruiters are specialized in finding qualified candidates and in good time. Time is an essential factor that plays on profitability. A $70,000 position vacant for a month can cost a company anywhere between $15000 - $30,000. Recruiters are experts at reaching out to passive candidates who are fulfilling the same role being advertised in a similar company. Every business success is dependent on its employees. Given that time and money are one of the biggest assets for doing business, being able to save both through the services of a recruiter is worth exploring. Therefore, recruiters are paid a fee to find someone who can and has already done the job elsewhere.

The relationship between a company’s HR and external recruiters is assumed to be foe by many but I rather believe we are friends as we complement each other. Recruiters are an external HR of the company and will always be the advocate for the candidate. They positively represent both the interest of the company and the candidate and always ensure there is a win-win-win for all parties.
