When you already have a job and everything seems set and going for you, why should you bother to write or revise your resume? Here are three reasons you should write your resume even when you are not looking for a job.
a) Most job opportunities are targeted towards already employed individuals. Hiring managers are looking for people who have already succeeded at solving a problem they are facing. Les Brown said “it’s better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.” Having your resume ready is being prepared for such unexpected opportunities when they show up.
b) Writing your resume even when you are not looking for a job helps you see your career on paper. When you look at your resume, you are able to define your career goals and better see areas that need improvement. This activity will allow you to plan better for your career and chart the path for your future.
c) Imagine you unexpectedly lose your job tomorrow. How anxious will you be? Having a well-prepared resume will take away some of the anxieties in the job search process.
It is good to update your resume at least once a year. A prime time to do this is after your performance review or dialogue as you will get to review your successes, achievements, and contributions to your current employer. Such successes are what must translate to your resume so you can conquer your next interview.
